HEIC, HEIF (still images) · up to 200 photos, 30 MB each

About this tool

HEIC (also called HEIF) is the photo format iPhones and many recent Android phones use by default. It keeps good quality at roughly half the size of a JPG, but plenty of places still refuse it: older Windows PCs, many upload forms, online shops, office software and some photo printers.

HEIC → PNG gives you a lossless copy that keeps every decoded pixel and any transparency. It is the safest choice for editing or for screenshots, though the file will usually be several times larger than the HEIC.

HEIC → JPG gives you the most widely accepted photo format with a small file size. JPG has no transparency, so any see-through areas are filled with the background colour you pick (white by default).

How to use HEIC Converter

  1. 1Choose or drop your HEIC or HEIF photos — up to 200 at once.
  2. 2Pick PNG (lossless) or JPG (smaller). For JPG, choose the background colour for transparent areas.
  3. 3Press “Convert”. The photo is decoded on your device; the first conversion loads the decoder once.
  4. 4Check the original and final size, then download your PNG or JPG.

Good to know

Browser and device limits

Safari decodes HEIC natively. On Chrome, Edge and Firefox we load a built-in decoder (about 3 MB, downloaded once). Very old browsers without WebAssembly can't convert HEIC and we tell you so instead of producing a broken file.

Live Photos and bursts

Only the main still picture of a HEIC file is converted. The video part of a Live Photo and extra frames in a burst are not included.

Large photos on phones

Photos above about 16 megapixels may be too big for some phones to draw. Standard 12 MP iPhone photos work fine; 48 MP ProRAW-sized HEICs are best converted on a computer.

Colour and orientation

The photo is turned the right way up during conversion. Wide-gamut (Display P3) colours are converted to standard colours so the result looks the same on every screen.

Frequently asked questions

Why can't I open HEIC files on my PC?

HEIC uses a compression method that needs an extra codec on Windows and isn't supported by many websites. Converting to JPG or PNG makes the photo open everywhere.

Should I choose PNG or JPG?

Choose JPG to share, email or upload photos — files stay small. Choose PNG if you want to edit the image further or need to keep transparent areas.

Does converting reduce quality?

PNG adds no further loss. JPG is saved at high quality, so the difference is not visible in normal use.

Can I stop my iPhone from taking HEIC photos?

Yes: Settings → Camera → Formats → Most Compatible. New photos are then saved as JPG. Existing HEIC photos still need converting.

Is my photo uploaded?

No. Your image stays on your device and is processed locally in your browser. Only the decoder program is downloaded, never your photo.
